“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.” — Anamika Mishra

We have made it to the end of the year. The colder weather reminds us that we are in the winter season. You need no better reason to curl up with a book, a blanket, and a warm beverage. This is the season of celebrating holidays, family, friends and sharing gifts.

Here are some special reading lists that are the gifts I’m sharing with you this season:

The first is Oprah’s list of all 103 books she has recommended since 1996.

She was among the first people and celebrities to share her love of reading and enthusiasm for authors. She has helped launch emerging authors and reacquaint us with those already prominent.

The second is from the members of Goodreads. The members have voted these 76 Most Popular Books of the Past Decade as the best of the best.

The third is six books of mystery and suspense from the blog, Off the Shelf, which all have a winter setting. You will need an extra blanket with any of these. They will keep their chill on throughout the read.

It seems like every bookstores and publishing houses host favorite books and authors of the year 2023. Barnes and Noble’s book and author of the year is The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride, for book of the year; David Gann is their author of the year. His latest book is The Wager.

Finally here’s a gem to savor over the holidays and hope we all learn more in the new year. A researcher has uncovered a new body of work believed to be by Louisa May Alcott. Seven short stories, five poems, and one non-fiction work were written under the name EH Gould.

For your New Year’s resolution, consider joining a book club to be introduced to new friends and new books.  The library’s book group Chat’n’Chew is always an option. December’s gathering is scheduled for December 20th, 12:00-2:30.  You have the option of meeting in person or connecting virtually with Google Meet. Register on the calendar on our website and you will receive the link for the meeting.
