Guest Librarian – October 2026

Categories:

Warren Carter, Board of Library Trustees

After twenty eight years in banking and capital markets and residency in Louisville, New York, London, and Washington DC, Warren moved into the slower pace of private education and managing a retail wine shop in rural Northwest Connecticut. While there he was invited onto the Board of Trustees at two libraries where he also served as Treasurer. Although these were small towns, the libraries proudly served as the cultural center of their community. He witnessed daily how well run libraries interacted with the public and how important it was to provide them the resources necessary for imaginative programming.

Warren moved to Hopkinton in early 2017 (to remarry) and came to know the library as a patron enjoying the beautiful newly refurbished quarters. When asked to join the Board in the fall of 2022 he eagerly accepted as he felt his earlier experience would be helpful. Warren feels that our library is a vibrant organization offering Hopkinton many cultural services beyond the traditional reading collection.

Warren Recommends:

Haberman, Maggie and Jonathan Swan. Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump
(A long-running best seller concerned with the extraordinary political and economic changes brought about by the second Trump administration)

Hannah, Kristin. The Women
(A long overdue celebration of the women nurses who served under challenging and dangerous conditions during the Vietnam War)

Kingsolver, Barbara. Demon Copperhead
(A clever retelling of Dickens’ David Copperfield, set in the American South)

Lively, Penelope. Moon Tiger
(1987 Booker Prize winner set in WWII Egypt. A powerful mixture of love and history.  No fairy tales here)

Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Great Gatsby
(Warren rereads this about every three years. He says the film versions don’t quite capture the message)

Reid, Taylor Jenkins. Daisy Jones and the Six
(Modern love story set within the rock music genre but with scruples)

Roscow, Christopher.  False Assurances
(A riveting espionage thriller set primarily in Boston and on the North Shore.  A real page-turner)

Sorkin, Andrew Ross. 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street history – – and How It Shattered a Nation
(Non-fiction easy reading on the causes and effects of the Great 1929 stock market crash. A real warning for today)

Stegner, Wallace. Crossing to Safety
(A poignant, powerful novel of love and friendship set around a Midwest University

Towles, Amore. A Gentleman in Moscow
(A warm, eloquent story within a story of post-Russian Revolution)
