Beat the Heat – Waterfalls and Fiction Set by the Ocean

I’ve always heard people call the month of August, the “dog days” of summer. Why? Because it always used to be the hottest month of summer when probably even dogs didn’t enjoy being outside. That is, up until this year when June was for the first time, the hottest month on record. Let’s not dwell on the heat focus instead on things to do to keep you cool during the summer…like hanging out near the water. And reading of course.

It might encourage you to go out on the ocean and do some deep-sea fishing or pick up a rod and find a cool local lake or river nearby. If you’re not sure where to go, refer to any of our travel guides to New England such as this recent offering: Fodor’s New England; or if you just want to be near water and can’t get to the ocean, try New England Waterfalls: a guide to more than 500 Cascades and Waterfalls.

Many authors use the ocean as their muse and focus. Try a few of these new suggestions from our collection:

Tress of the Emerald Sea is a delightful fantasy whose main character, Tess lives on an island and engages in a high seas adventure with her father. Erin Hilderand writes captivating romance escapes to the ocean. Her novels are typically set on and around Nantucke, where she resides. Her latest title is Five Star Weekend. If there’s a long hold liist, why not try out her pevious books, such as Endless Summer and The Hotel Nantucket.

Publisher’s Weekly has released its list of Bestselling books for the year 2023, (so far) The list also includes Children’s and Young Adult titles. Share the list with your children. Reading with all family members on a hot summer’s day can be considered a classic family affair no matter whether you are reading in the house or hammock..

Our adult reading group, Chat and Chew reconvenes again our summer hiatus, on September 20th from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm. We will be gathering in person but adding a Google Meet component so tjat those that wish, can join the discussion virtually, from home. REGISTER HERE.
